Spring Village Library Welcomes ICT4D
The
facilities of the Spring Village Library are currently being used as a venue
to promote Computer literacy within the community. This is a program
affiliated with the HEART NTA Trust and is designed to provide computer based
literacy for 17 - 25 year olds.
The
location will be used as a pilot centre for promoting computer and computer
communication technology in order to help narrow the digital-divide often
found in lesser urban areas across Jamaica.
The
program will be designed and sponsored by ICT4D, which is an open,
Jamaican-based network organization established to define, promote and
facilitate the use of information and communication technology in Jamaica’s development process. It is a non-profit
organization with main partners such as the HEART Trust/NTA and the IICD.
The
Spring Village library came to be chosen through our
resident Peace Corps Volunteer Craig Erickson who recently attended one of
their seminars and introduced ICT4D to the idea of having a centre in Spring Village. Because of the resources on location it
was an easy choice for them.
Students
who use computers at most ICT facilities across Jamaica are required to pay
for time on the machines, however in Spring Village this will be provided
free of cost. In addition, the library also has additional material which
will help to enhance these programs from basic all the way to professional
levels.
